Adventure High Porting Update 1

Thought I'd write a blog post about this to let everyone know what's going on with Adventure High who are not a part of my patreon. It is still in development. It's size though has reached a point where I can't get stencyl to compile it.

So, in order to keep developing the game, I am porting it into Unity. I've hired someone to help me with the port, and so far they've done a fair bit of work on the conversation interface and are starting on some of the RPG mechanics at the moment.

It may be a few months before the port is ready, but once it is, I will have Adventure High back to monthly updates. In the meantime, I'm doing monthly updates on Spiral Clicker instead, so that there is no delay on getting regular new content.

Thanks for your patience, everyone. Hopefully the port goes smoothly, and if we're extra lucky, maybe unity will make it possible to fix some of the weird issues the game has that I had not been able to solve due to the limitations of stencyl's engine.

  2. See, I understand this means we get the same game we already know just with a new engine but my first thought was that you were turning it into some bizarre 3d monstrosity, the kind of stereotype people imagine when they hear "unity game".

    1. Yeah, I'm not going to do 3D stuff, indie3D never looks good to me. There will probably be some improvement though to the way the game looks as a result of not needing to compress all the images.

    2. I saw a few decent ones (or, at least, passsable), but they are very rare and slow to make. Since you are remaking part of game form the scratch, I hope you can tackle a few issues like when there are multiple events for one person in one location active at the same time, and ine cover the other. Sorry if it was already solved, the game disappeard from my "chech often" list around .52 and I haven't played in a while as it got a bit... messy with the story.

  3. will save files be lost in the engine transfer?

    1. Most probably, it's completely different engine, so it would require something like specific script that would import files from one ver. and make new saves readible by other. considering that it's still a WIP game, it's not worth the work.

    2. yeah and I've not played in so long I'd not be surprised if my save is gone anyway; even if it was there, I'd be restarting to get a fresh run in

    1. Figured out what I was doing wrong but I have another question. What story or thing is the book supposed to be referencing? I don't recognize it.

  5. Has there been literally any update on the port in these past 3 months?

    1. From Changer when I asked why he didn't update. sorry that I hadn't updated the blog. I've been waiting on new news to update with, and it's just been a lot of "still working on it"

  6. So has Adventure High been abandoned? Just curious.

    1. Starting to feel like it. Wonder if someone else will take it up. I heard you can DL 0.55 on the wiki, at least.

    2. I don't think Adventure High has been abandoned. I asked in a stream earlier with regards to porting and this is Changer's reply.Porting is still not yet progressing. The person I hired hasn't given me anything playable yet, though I've paid quite a bit out by now. So it's a feels bad man from me.

    3. It is not abandoned. I still intend to get back to updating it as soon as the port is finished. The person I hired has still not finished, and someone else has offered to try porting it themselves. So, I'm hoping someone will get it before too much longer. I haven't been able to port it myself because I am working on learning the engine it's being ported to and doing a port at the same time as learning seems like it would end in bad design decisions being made due to ignorance. If I finish learning before the port is finished, I'll start working on the port myself.

  7. I can understand it taking a while to learn a new system. The lack of updates is unsettling, but I can understand how frustrating it can be.

    1. The problem is that Changer isn't learning the system - it's being ported by another person, who apparently never updates. (Source: I lurk his Discord).

    2. (I hate how you can't edit) Also, once it's ported to Unity, Changer STILL needs to learn it (but he's apparently not studying it).

    3. That's a real pity. Adventure high was way better than Spiral Clicker.

    4. You do know that it is easier to learn how to use unity than it is to learn to port into unity and then learn how to use it right?

    5. Freg: I know how Unity works. My point still stands: if he doesn't learn it, the updates STILL won't happen.

    6. I am working on learning, Sacredhell. It's just sort of slow going because I am simultaneously working on my other projects so that I don't go completely without giving people something worth playing every month. I had hoped that hiring someone to do the port would make it faster and easier, but apparently this person is not a reliable person.
